Water vapour in circumstellar envelopes

چکیده
We present observations of the 313 →220 line of p-H2O at 183 GHz in the direction of the circumstellar envelopes of 23 O–rich evolved stars. The 183 GHz data are complemented with observations of CO J=2 →1, p-H2O 515 →422 at 325 GHz, o-H2O 616 →523 at 22 GHz and SiO v=1 J=2 →1. The line profiles of these transitions are compared and discussed in terms of the regions where they are formed. We have also made time variability studies of the 183 GHz water line. The changes of the line profile and flux from one epoch to another are small in comparison with those of the o-H2O line at 22 GHz and the SiO v=1 J=2 →1 line as reported in the literature. The main characteristics of the 183 GHz emission can be summarized as follows: a) the 183 GHz line is of maser nature; b) in stars with low mass loss rates (Ṁ ) the emission peaks at a velocity similar to that of the star, whilst in stars with high Ṁ the emission peaks at velocities close to the terminal velocity of the envelope; c) in stars with high Ṁ the blue–shifted emission –relative to the stellar velocity– is often more intense than the red–shifted emission; d) the full width at zero power of the 183 GHz line relative to the terminal velocity of the envelope increases with Ṁ ; e) the power emitted in the line and Ṁ are also linearly correlated. The latter empirical relationship is compatible with the emission of a saturated maser line and with small variations of H2O abundance from object to object.

Circumstellar water vapour in M-type AGB stars: Radiative transfer models, abundances and predictions for HIFI
Context. Surprisingly high amounts of H2O have recently been reported in the circumstellar envelope around the M-type asymptotic giant branch star W Hya. This has lead to the speculation that evaporation of icy cometary or planetary bodies might be an effective ongoing mechanism in such systems. However, substantial uncertainties remain, as the required radiative transfer modelling is difficult...
متن کاملImaging the circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars ⋆
Aims. We report the results of an exploratory program to image the extended circumstellar envelopes of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in dust-scattered galactic light. The goal is to characterize the morphology of the envelopes as a probe of the mass-loss process. Methods. The observations consist of short exposures with the VLT and longer exposures with 1–2 m telescopes, augmented with ar...
متن کاملSmall Carbon Chains in Circumstellar Envelopes
Observations of carbon-rich circumstellar envelopes were made using the Phoenix spectrograph on the Gemini South telescope to determine the abundance of small carbon chain molecules. Vibration–rotation lines of the ν3 antisymmetric stretch of C3 near 2040 cm−1 (4.902 μm) have been used to determine the column density for four carbon-rich circumstellar envelopes: CRL 865, CRL 1922, CRL 2023 and ...
متن کاملMicrolensing of circumstellar envelopes II. Emission lines from radial and azimuthal flow during fold caustic crossings
This paper examines the line profile evolution due to bulk motion in circumstellar envelopes during microlensing fold caustic crossing events. These events have recently been shown to be a sensitive probe of stellar surface brightness profiles, thus providing a means – through both photometric and spectroscopic observations – to constrain and test stellar atmosphere models. Here it is demonstra...
متن کاملOrganic chemistry in circumstellar envelopes: Setting the stage for prebiotic synthesis
One of the few carbon-rich environments found in interstellar space is the ejecta of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Such material, which forms a circumstellar envelope, becomes enriched in carbon due to “dredge-up” phenomena associated with nucleosynthesis. A unique organic synthesis flourishes in the gas phase in these envelopes, and radio and millimeter observations have identified a wi...
